In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to express my decades- long gratitude to be part of a community that created and built the Scandinavian Living Center and the Scandinavian Cultural Center & Library. Our collective success was achieved through generous donors and volunteers. As we move forward, we continue to make improvements with the help of that same kind of generosity.

I am happy to share that our “BHAG moment” (big hairy audacious goals) discussed in previous newsletters, is turning into a great accomplishment. Renovations scheduled to be completed late next year are a year ahead of schedule due to a few extremely generous donors. The extra good news is that moving the completion date to this year means that we will also save thousands of dollars.

First, to our designers, architects, and builders—Wellesley Design Consultants, BWA Architecture, and Comeau & Kelly Construction. I think that you will see the quality of their work and commitment every time you visit. Additionally, our Maintenance and Housekeeping crew, who helped keep everything running as smoothly as possible all throughout our summer of…creative disruption! Also, none of this would have been possible without the leadership of one of our Building Committee members, Garth Johnson, who put countless hours into these projects. And finally—and most importantly—to our residents, who navigated new walking-traffic patterns, sealed off rooms, and plenty of noisy days. We are so grateful for their patience and good humor (which continues to this day) while we were working hard to make their home a nicer place to live, as quickly as possible. Think of it. For anyone who has lived through a home renovation and seen your family juggle their routines around floor sanding and new bathroom installations—well, we were trying to accomplish that in a home for 40! Our appreciation to and for our residents will, I hope, be expressed for generations in the form of new finishes and furnishings to be enjoyed by all.

While in Boston attending an international conference for aging service providers, they took the opportunity to visit our community. During their visit, they were eager to learn about our community-centered model and gathered insights and ideas to incorporate into their own work. Our new friends were excited to see how SLC has brought care and community together in a seamless environment which encourages residents to live rich, connected lives.

Following major surgery in the fall of 2023, I suffered temporary paralysis and a series of physical setbacks. During the healing process I knew I needed to have outsized goals to live up to everything people depended on me for and everything I needed to accomplish. What I needed was a BHAG moment—setting goals to achieve what others might think is impossible. For me, one Big Hairy

The pushback from doctors, nurses, family, and friends was understandable. To make matters worse (and unknown to me at the time) there would be six more corrective operations that would cause numerous delays in my training. To many, my goal was too ambitious, but I was determined and was prepared to do it alone.

So. Marathon training. You don’t go from recovery to 26.2 miles in an instant. You take small steps at first, a few miles at a time, as your muscles and joints adjust to exertion. You walk first, then you jog, then you commit to a 5K, then you double that. Then you double that again and keep at it and learn along the way that the only way to overcome challenges is to not get stuck in despair but to move

Similar to my marathon preparation, I understood that there would be setbacks and obstacles. Knowing what I know about the SLC after 30 years, this quest would not be about going it alone! This was always going to be about coming together—and moving forward—as a community. And let me tell you, taking on a marathon as a community is a journey that so many friends and supporters have already been a part of.

The book opens on Greater Boston, with the collected articles comprising the “Longevity Hub” special project that ran in the Boston Globe in 2021 and 2022. Then it zooms out to take in a more global stage, written by representatives of cities staking a claim as international models of aging innovation.

Before we started our adventure, my wife Carole and I took a quick two-day trip to Paris to visit one of my favorite iconic places: the famous pyramid entrance to the Louvre. The now famous illustration of the pyramid was created by acclaimed architectural illustrator Paul Stevenson (Steve) Oles. My visit to the pyramid took on a new meaning because Steve Oles also created an award-winning drawing of our new veranda. And, on October 26, 2023, we were proud to dedicate the new veranda to Suzanne and Buck Frederick. (See pages 3-5.)

I ENDED MY ARTICLE WITH THE WORD “FORWARD.”

This interesting word can have many different meanings. The one I want to focus on is the definition that states forward is “advocating an advanced policy in the direction of what is considered progress.” And while we have always felt that our commitment to community engagement through community-centered living was progressive, it is really common sense that has existed for decades and simply been embraced by us.

As we move forward, we are looking forward to the beautiful redesign of the SLC front porch to be completed later this summer. In addition, the renovation of other common areas, and the energy-efficient enhancement and replacement of the boiler system, will take place later this year. Is this forward? Well, yes: it is doing the right thing based on a series of thoughtful actions and common sense—a movement supported by the entire community.

Your support as a community of participants, residents, visitors, and donors is essential to our success. I want to thank each and every one of our donors to our Fund the Future Campaign and to our operations this year—knowing that every gift you make has the ability to nurture, house, feed, and entertain everyone living at or visiting the SLC.

We always say that we are here when you need us. To be the best that we can be, we need your support as well. Let us embrace the idea of forward not only as progress but as action inspired by common sense, community, and doing things right: moving forward together.
