Dance Currents Inc. Presents: “Moving Forward in Place”

Dance Currents Inc. Presents: “Moving Forward in Place”

SATURDAY, JUNE 14TH | 4:00 PM EST

Dance Currents Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dance company founded and directed by Kathy Hassinger.   Its mission is to strengthen the links between past, present and future dance; to present the art of dance as vital to the health and culture of a thriving community; to collaborate with artists of different disciplines; to expand the field and appeal to the broadest community; and to participate in fundraising events that benefit the entire community.

The company has received grants from Emerson College, New England Foundation for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, The Newton Cultural Council and from Newton Community Pride.

Hassinger taught Perspectives in World Dance at Emerson College for eight years. She was also head of the dance department at Newton Country Day School for 16 years. She has produced several full-length dance concerts including “Drawn In,” “Charge the Air” and “Three Modern Choreographers at Triskelion Arts” in New York. Hassinger received the Calsea Award for building self-esteem in students and a NULA (Newton Universal Legendary Award) for committing her life to excellence by impacting her community through the performing arts.

Hassinger directed, co-authored and produced the film To Feel the Earth and Touch the Sky.  She has had two virtual and six live screenings of the film, most recently at the Friends Community in Sandy Springs, MD.

Moving Forward in Place, the program you will see June 14th at 4pm is a hybrid dance/film performance.  You will see a short dance titled Still/Moving, a longer one titled Places on the Way, the film, To Feel the Earth and Touch the Sky, Living the Legacy of Modern Dance and a piece by Yvonne Rainer, Diagonal.    The point of the performance is to present how people, art forms and art spaces evolve.  Still/Moving shows how individuals can move forward in place.  Places on the Way shows the path of an artistic journey, the film is the evolution of modern dance and Diagonal extends that evolution a bit further.  Both the Scandinavian Cultural Center and the Allen house have grown into art spaces, keeping their original purpose.

My hope is that this performance will be a reminder of the triumph of the human spirit in artists and communities who create despite difficult circumstances.  To inspire resilience and creativity, we need to present those artists/dancers/communities who embodied both.   To view all past events and partnership opportunities, please go to www.dancecurrentsinc.com.
